spondylosis

Spondylosis is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal discs and vertebrae. It often refers to the degeneration of the spine, including osteoarthritis of the spine, degenerative disc disease, and the formation of bone spurs (osteophytes). This condition can lead to spinal pain and stiffness and can sometimes cause nerve compression, resulting in neurological symptoms.

Causes:

  • Aging: The most common cause of spondylosis is the natural aging process, which leads to the degeneration of spinal structures.
  • Genetics: A family history of spinal disorders can increase the risk.
  • Occupational Hazards: Jobs that involve heavy lifting, repetitive motion, or prolonged sitting can contribute to spinal degeneration.
  • Injury: Past injuries to the spine can accelerate degenerative changes.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity can weaken spinal muscles and contribute to degeneration.
  • Obesity: Excess weight can put additional stress on the spine, leading to faster degeneration.

Types:

  • Cervical Spondylosis: Affects the neck region.
  • Thoracic Spondylosis: Affects the mid-back region.
  • Lumbar Spondylosis: Affects the lower back region.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and Stiffness: In the affected region of the spine, typically worse in the morning and after periods of inactivity.
  • Numbness and Tingling: In the limbs, if nerve roots are compressed.
  • Weakness: In the muscles served by affected nerves.
  • Loss of Coordination: Difficulty with fine motor skills if the spinal cord is compressed.
  • Headaches: In the case of cervical spondylosis, headaches originating from the neck.
